Camp Kum-Ba-Yah@CosbyWoods Mission Statement

Camp Kum-Ba-Yah@CosbyWoods (CKBY) is an urban forest in the heart of Lynchburg, Virginia, offering outdoor access and environmental education to the surrounding community. Founded in 1950 by Bev Cosby, CKBY’s mission is to serve emerging social needs through the process of engaging children, families and our community in meaningful outdoor experiences.

Summer Camp is our largest program spanning 8 weeks of summer. CKBY also offers a pool membership for families from May 28-August 28, 2022 and unique environmental education programs throughout the academic year for schools in Lynchburg City and the surrounding area. Programs are designed for and cater to individual school’s goals and grade level.

The Camp Kum-Ba-Yah Family Pool Program follows the mission of the camp and is open and welcoming to all. It is a place where people from different backgrounds can learn from one another and come together in the spirit of recreation and friendship.

General Policies and Procedures

Family Membership includes the members of one household. This does not include family members who are not part of one immediate household. Please see guest policy below.

Each person is asked to sign a daily registration sheet when entering the pool, noting the date and time of day.  Use a separate line for each individual, including young children.  This is helpful and important in administration of the pool program and in keeping track of the number of persons using the pool each day.

All tobacco products and alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Restrooms are available in the bath house facility adjoining the pool.  There are no locker facilities or attendants at the bath house.  Swimmers are responsible for their own belongings.  No valuables should be brought to the pool or grounds.  All members are expected to help care for the facilities and to assist in maintaining utmost cleanliness and order at all times.

Children under twelve years old must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult also dressed for swimming.  Lifeguards are not able to serve as babysitters.

Everyone is asked to make an effort to keep the pool, grounds and bath house clean and attractive at all times.  Place all trash in cans located at both gate entrances.  No food or drinks are to be brought within the enclosed pool area.  Please enjoy meals using the picnic tables outside of the fenced pool area.  Please see that all towels and personal items are gathered up when leaving.  All members are requested to take the little extra effort to keep the grounds beautiful.  Any articles left at the pool, on the grounds or in the bath house will be deposited daily in a “Lost and Found” box.

Lifeguards will have full responsibility and authority to ensure the safety and welfare of all swimmers.  For example, each time thunder is heard, the pool complex will be closed by the lifeguards for a full 30 minutes.  If no more thunder is heard the pool will reopen after the 30 minute wait.  Anyone showing disregard for the safety of others, lack of consideration for others’ enjoyment of the pool, or failure to abide by the regulations set forth by the Camp Kum-Ba-Yah pool program will result  in a cancellation of pool membership, without refund.

Guests are welcome to swim only when accompanying regular pool member participants, $10.00 per person ($5.00 per child), per day, payable in full to the Lifeguard upon arrival.  All must be bona fide guests previously invited by a regular member.  Credit cannot be extended for guest payments.  Each guest will also register at time of payment, with names immediately following their hosts.
